Neurology

Neurology

Sue Fitzmaurice, BVSc, MRCVS, DipACVIM(Neurology), DipECVN

Neurology is the study of diseases of the nervous system. Many unwell animals have clinical signs which appear to arise from the nervous system e.g lethargy, mental dullness, change in personality, weakness, ataxia, lameness, collapse but in fact come from derangement of other organ systems.

It is the neurologist's job to differentiate those animals with neurological disease and decide on the best method of investigation and treatment. In many cases affected animals will improve without intervention. In some cases, intervention may not extend the animal's quality of life in a meaningful way. Decisions for patient care are made based on the animal's needs and the owners' guidelines. A timely diagnosis from referral improves patient care and saves money!

Common problems seen include:

  1. Balance
  2. Seizures
  3. Weakness
  4. Ataxia
  5. Change in personality, alertness
  6. Spinal pain
